Yuan Anxi Iron Plate - Magical Square (2014)

Dedicated to Sekhmet, the Desert Queen in Purple, and Al-Uzzat, Al-lat and Manat:




The ancient Arabs believed that numbers are flesh, while the word meaning behind the numbers with their various roots, which acquire meaning depending on the context and cipher, are the soul of a particular sequence of numbers. Assuming that these people artfully revealed and concealed in the distant past, one might assume that various magic squares have not escaped such treatment, which might spontaneously reveal their wisdom. Here I present a hypothetical, poetic meaning behind the magic square of Yuan Anxi.


Methodology and interpretation: The numeric values are translated into alphabetic values of stem consonants. Using the Abjad number system, they are reversed as if they were read from right to left, as in Persian (Farsi) and Arabic script. Then, the word stems are analysed and contrasted contextually and symbolically. Each cell represents its own meaning, but it is not combined with neighbouring cells, but read intuitively in the next cell. The combinations of cells do not convey meanings when summed by roots, but taken individually, some polysemous continuity emerges. Each of the root words extracted from these values is listed at the end of this document - they have been analysed for precision, and since this is a poetic endeavour, it does not claim to accurately translate the correct, absolute meaning, if any. In this poetic context, the author has done his best to convey the 'soul' that emerged during the conversation with the square. Once again, the following interpretation in no way pretends to be a definitive answer, but is the poetic result of an inner journey, and so I would suggest reading it as just that: Poetry or a parable, which does not diminish the aesthetic value of the exploration.




“This iron plate is inscribed with Arabic numbers in a six by six grid. It was excavated from the palace of Prince Anxi (Son of Kubhlai Khan) in the eastern suburbs of Xi'an.[1]


Most probably, the Iron Square came into possession of Mongolians (who already conquered the Yuan part of China) after the conquest of Eastern Persia in the years 1218 – 1221.


During the Northern Song Dynasty, Xi'an was known as Jingzhaofu. Its name was changed to Fengyuan in 1273 under the Yuan Dynasty. In 1275 Prince of Anxi (son of Khublai Khan) or Ananda , who was a Mongolian prince, built a palace city near Xi'an. It was called Dawang Dian in Chinese and Gan Erduo in Mongolian. Today, it is referred to as Anxi."

In modern Persian, however, the ending hā has almost entirely superseded ān both for inanimated and animated beings.
